“The ‘Wants’ of This World”

Text: Luke 12:13-21 

I. THE SNARE OF COVETOUSNESS

1 Thessalonians 2:5 calls it the the Cloak of Covetousness

1 Timothy 6:6-10

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

The key phrase = “They that will be rich.”

Covetousness and Christ are a contrast

Covetousness and Christ are two different masters

Is covetousness really that bad?

Ephesians 5:5 – “For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”

II. THE SECURITY AGAINST COVETOUSNESS

A. PERSPECTIVE

= be content with that you have

If you’re a child of God – think what you have

1. God Himself

Psalm 73:25-26 – “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”

2. Your family

 Proverbs 18:22 – “Who so findeth a wife findeth a good thing.”

Psalm 127:3 – “Children are a heritage of the Lord.”

3. Friends

Proverbs 17:17 – “A friend loveth at all times.”

4. God’s wisdom

Proverbs 3:13-14 – Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 

5. Satisfaction

Philippians 4

I have learned to be content in all my circumstances.

B. PRACTICE

How do you fight against covetousness?

1. Give your to Jesus

4. Remember where you are

III. THE SOLUTION TO COVETOUSNESS

= Giving

Six Principles of Generosity

1. Generous people often give than asked to give

2. Generous people give out of their – whether large or small

3. Generous people give more than just their .

4. Generous people give as a biproduct of their personal

5. Generous people give of what other people give

6. Generous people give to see the impossible become .
