The Fly of the Untamed Tongue

Bible text: Ecclesiastes 10:1

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor.

I. THE FORCE OF THE TONGUE

… grievous words stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. Proverbs 12:22

He that keepeth his mouth, keepeth his life, but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:3

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. Proverbs 15:4

A fool’s mouth is his destruction and his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 18:7

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. James 3:6

II. THE FIRE OF THE TONGUE

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and settethon fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. James 3:5-6

III. THE FRUIT OF THE TONGUE

But the tongue can no man tame. It is an unruly evil full of deadly poison. James 3:8
