Jesus Prays for Us

Sermon by Pastor Brent Snook / Dec 3, 2023

Series: The Priorities of Jesus

Text: John 17:20-26

In review: the priorities of Jesus –

  1. Jesus prays for Himself (vss 1-5)
  2. Jesus prays for His disciples (vss 6-19)

I. THE PEOPLE OF UNITY

Read John 17:20-21a

Satan’s strategy throughout church history has been to destroy unity within the people of God

“To live above with those we love – Oh that will be glory
To live below with those we know – now that’s another story”

Verses in scripture calling for unity:

  • Judges 20:11
  • Psalm 133:1
  • Philippians 1:27
  • 1 Corinthians 1:10
  • Philippians 2:2

(MULTILINE REVEAL)

II. THE PICTURE OF UNITY

Read John 17:21-23

The picture of unity is linked to the oneness within the Trinity

Unity is not unanimity

Unity is not uniformity

(MULTILINE REVEAL)

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”  St. Augustine

A Picture of Unity

  1. United in
  2. United in
  3. United in
  4. United in and sanctification

(MULTILINE REVEAL)

III. THE PROOF OF UNITY

Read John 17:21 and John 17:23

Jesus prays for unity four times in the last part of His prayer

“Does it ever occur to you that 100 pianos all tuned to the same fork
are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being
tuned – not to each other but to another standard to which each one
must individually bow.” A.W. Tozer

(MULTILINE REVEAL)

IV. THE POWER OF UNITY

Read John 17:24-26

The world in waiting to see divine love in action

The great word of the gospel is LOVE

(MULTILINE REVEAL)
