The Importance of One

Sermon by Pastor Bob Johnson/ Oct 16, 2022

John 1:43-51

How important is the number ONE?

In the Bible, the number one is used almost 2000 times.

Deuteronomy 6:4  Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD…

The number ONE also represents the unity between God the Father and His Son Jesus, as declared in John 10:30 . I and my Father are one.

Jesus, by his singular sacrifice, has made possible the forgiveness of all our sins. He is the ONE Mediator, the ONE Shepherd, the ONE Savior in the life of a Christian. (1 Timothy 2:5; John 10:16)

Ephesians 4:4-6  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;  (5)  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,  (6)  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

In John 1:43-44, we are introduced to a man named Philip.

Who’s Your One and the Pray, Care, Share Cause circle:

to enlist each one of us into the ultimate cause – the cause of Jesus  – the sharing of the gospel, the good news with those who are lost.

Nathaniel’s Confrontation

John 1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

-He was confronted by a compassionate friend

-He was confronted with biblical truth.

-He was confronted with a fatal decision.

“Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph”

Luke 16:22-23 … the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments,

John 1:46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

Come” is the great invitation of God’s grace.

John 1:47-48 … Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!  (48)  Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me?

Why are we slow to witness? UNPREPARED

What do we need? LEARNING

Nathan’s Conviction

John 1:48 Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee..

Why are we slow to witness? DISTRACTED

What do we need? ALERTNESS

Nathaniel’s Confession

John 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

Why are we slow to witness? INTIMIDATED

What do we need? BOLDNESS

Nathaniel’s Conversion

(50)  Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.  (51)  And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Why are we slow to witness? DOUBT

What do we need? FAITH
